Arsenal news: Petr Cech PRAISED for big error vs Newcastle – It was brilliant | Football | Sport
Cech has looked uncomfortable this season with the style of football Unai Emery has brought to Arsenal.
The former Chelsea man has struggled with playing out from the back and has almost gifted a goal to the opposition on more than one occasion.
In the first half of the match at Newcastle, Cech was passed the ball on the right-hand side of his 18-yard area by Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi.
With two Newcastle players baring down on him, instead of attempting to clear with his weaker right foot, Cech attempted to pass back to Mustafi but could only kick it off for a corner.
But Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara says that was a smart move from Cech, as kicking with his right foot could have led to a Newcastle goal.
“We saw the back-pass to him in the game,” Kamara said on Goals on Sunday.
“I think he’s done brilliant. I would have to say, because of the fact that he is predominantly left-footed.
“So when Mustafi plays that ball back to him there, he’s already thought in his mind ‘if I hit this with my right foot and I scuff it, those two Newcastle players in front of me could benefit from that’.
“‘So I’m going to keep it on my left, it might go out of play or it might go back to Mustafi’, and it goes out of play.”
Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic agreed with Kamara and says Cech made the sensible decision.
“Yeah, obviously with Arsenal’s philosophy now sometimes what’s going to happen is you’re going to be in difficult situations,” Begovic said.
“As we mentioned earlier, as a goalkeeper you have to take the risk-management side to it.
“He just made a very sensible decision there, put it out of play, deal with the corner.
“If he tried to take a touch then those guys are on him and the next thing you know it’s probably a goal.
“So from that point of view he probably made the right decision.
“Evaluate the risk and go from there.”
