Arsenal news: Sol Campbell reveals why Jack Wilshere missed out on England World Cup squad
Wilshere made 38 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this term.
That is the most he has played for a club side in a single campaign since he made 49 outings for the Gunners in 2010/11.
He has remained mainly injury free ever since he broke a bone in his leg while on loan at Bournemouth in April 2017.
But the 26-year-old picked up a knock during the last international break and withdrew from England’s friendlies with Italy and the Netherlands.
Campbell believes Wilshere should have been picked but says fitness levels ultimately cost him.
“You need someone to open it up,” Campbell said on Sky Spots.
“You know, take on a player in a tight kind of situation.
“Then commit someone else, someone else comes in and they have to open it up and free another forward.
“He can do that. He’s very good at doing that.
“So I think England will miss that type of close control when you need someone just to do something special, open it up and then maybe get a cross or a ricochet or whatever or put the team you’re playing against under pressure.
“If he’d have been fit all the way through the season, I’d think he’d definitely be in the squad.
“He’s got a lot of quality.”
