Arsenal news: Unai Emery reveals Southampton plans despite worsening injury crisis | Football | Sport
Shkodran Mustafi was the latest Gunners centre-back ruled out of next Saturday’s trip to St Mary’s after he was one of three players booked for diving in the 1-0 win against Huddersfield on Saturday.
Granita Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi were also shown yellow cards for simulation.
Emery now faces the prospect of going to Saints with Laurent Koscielny his only available centre-back.
Rob Holding has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering cruciate ligament damage, while Sokratis Papastathopoulos is also banned.
Koscielny has only just come back from his own injury and not featured at all since May.
However, Emery is confident one of his full-backs can cover in the heart of defence.
“I need to give my mind two days off,” he said when asked about the Southampton game.
“Now I don’t know how we’re going to play next week.
“But we have players. Today (against Huddersfield) Lichtsteiner played at centre-back, in Manchester also.
“Koscielny is coming, also Nacho Monreal. I have players.”
Emery’s side need a late winer from Lucas Torreira to claim all three points against Huddersfield in a tight clash at the Emirates.
The Gunners are now unbeaten in 21 games in all competitions.
“We needed to finish this week with a win,” Emery added. “We spoke about this.
“We needed to respect them, to find the victory individually and collectively.
“We are happy for the three points, continuing in the table in a good position.
“The injuries, the yellow cards come with the matches. The most important now is two days off for every player, for us also, and coming back Tuesday thinking Thursday in the Europa League and Southampton.”
