Arsenal transfer news: Sky Sports pundit makes Aaron Ramsey claim as uncertainty continues
That is the verdict of Sky Sports pundit Dean Ashton as uncertainty over where the midfielder’s future lies rumbles on.
Ramsey made 30 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions last season and is a candidate for the captaincy under Unai Emery.
A potential move away from north London has been talked about this summer though with the Gunners struggling to get him to sign a new deal.
Arsenal are facing the prospect of having to cash-in on Ramsey rather than lose him on a free transfer in 12 months’ time.
Ashton has now questioned why Ramsey has not yet put pen to paper while highlighting his importance to Arsenal.
“Aaron Ramsey’s stats from last season are impressive,” former West Ham striker Ashton told Sky Sports.
“He got one more assist and three more goals than Mesut Ozil. He goes under the radar.
“Arsenal would be surprised how much they’d miss him – he influences games and it’s strange they haven’t signed up on a new deal.”
Speculation surrounding Aaron Ramsey comes amid a summer transfer window during which Arsenal have made five signings.
Ashton has made a prediction about how new boys Bernd Leno and Stephan Lichtsteiner will fare under Emery.
“The signing of Bernd Leno could be a snip,” Ashton added. “I’m sure he’ll start being he’s the new manager’s signing.
“Hector Bellerin is great to watch but Stephan Lichtsteiner brings so much experience. He’s full of energy still. Once he gets in, then Bellerin may struggle to get back in.”
Ashton has also offered his take on how Arsenal should approach their Premier League opener against Manchester City.
“I prefer Arsenal playing with one striker – it brings the best out of the three players in behind and the quality they show,” said Ashton.
“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pips Alexandre Lacazette for me, due to his extra bit of pace and link-up play with Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
“He’s a box player and a player Arsenal have needed for a while. He guarantees goals.”
