Laurent Koscielny is so desperate to leave Arsenal and return to France that he is considering buying out the remainder of his contract with the club.

The 33-year-old stunned Arsenal when he refused to travel with the rest of the squad for their pre-season tour of the United States on Thursday due to his desire to leave this summer.

Arsenal condemned Koscielny’s actions in a statement, saying: ‘We are very disappointed by Laurent’s actions, which are against our clear instructions.

‘Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel to the US for our pre-season tour. We hope to resolve this matter and will not be providing any further comment at this time.’

Among the clubs interested in signing Koscielny are Lyon, Bordeaux and Rennes, however, Arsenal are yet to receive a formal offer for their club captain.

Should no bid be forthcoming, Koscielny could take the step of buying out the remainder of his £90,000 per week contract at the Emirates, which is set to expire next June.

Neymar is the most famous example of a player buying out his contract to move elsewhere when he did so in 2017 to facilitate his transfer to PSG from Barcelona.

The Brazilian and his lawyers paid the €222m release clause in his Barcelona contract to become a free agent and move to PSG who then footed the bill.

One of the reasons behind Koscielny’s unhappiness is in regards to Arsenal’s club policy of only offering one-year contracts to players over the age of 30.

According to the Evening Standard, Bordeaux are willing to offer him a three-year deal which would give him longer-term security.

Arsenal’s long-serving club captain also believes that he should be released from his deal as a goodwill gesture following nine years of service after joining from FC Lorient in 2010.
