Burnley transfer news: Southampton’s Fraser Forster a target after Nick Pope injury scare
Pope, England’s No 3 goalkeeper at the World Cup, was last night sweating on the results of a scan on the shoulder he dislocated in the Europa League qualifier at Aberdeen last Thursday, amid fears he could be on the sidelines for up to six months.
Clarets boss Sean Dyche is understood to have asked Southampton about Forster’s availability with a view to a loan deal as potential cover for Pope.
Forster, 30, lost his place in the Saints team in January to Alex McCarthy and is now third choice following the £13m arrival of Angus Gunn from Manchester City.
And the south coast club are willing to contribute towards Forster’s £65,000-a-week wages to help move him out of St Marys.
With Tom Heaton – who like Pope suffered a dislocated shoulder last season – now nursing a calf problem, former Manchester Untied No 2 Anders Lindegaard is set to replace Pope for Thursday’s second leg against Aberdeen at Turf Moor with the tie finely balanced at 1-1.
