Chelsea transfer news: Jordan Pickford demand made to Everton by Victor Anichebe
That’s from former Toffees striker Victor Anichebe as Chelsea show interest in the goalkeeper.
The Blues are likely to lose Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid either this summer or next with the Belgian having just entered the final year of his contract.
And Chelsea have identified Pickford as their No 1 target to replace Courtois in case an agreement is reached with Spanish giants Madrid before the window shuts on August 9.
Everton however will rebuff any approach for Pickford, who they only signed from Sunderland for £30million a year ago.
Pickford has since enjoyed a strong first season at Goodison Park before excelling at the World Cup with England with a succession of top saves helping Gareth Southgate’s side reach the semi-finals.
And ex-Everton forward Anichebe believes the Merseyside outfit have to resist any interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea if they want to make forward steps under new manager Marco Silva because Pickford is one of the best in the league.
“They have to try and keep hold of him,” he told Sky Sports News.
“He’s one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. People could argue that he is probably one of the best in the world right now.
“Keeping hold of him is really important. It will be difficult if the big teams do come in with a big offer but as long as they try and keep him and keep adding to what they have I think they will do well this year.”
Everton will even offer Pickford a new-and-improved deal to fend off any bids.
The 24-year-old, the club’s Player of the Year last season, will be offered terms reflecting his excellent last 12 months.
