Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle
Premier League 2018-19
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Willian’s superb curling goal secured a hard-fought 2-1 win for Chelsea over Newcastle on Saturday evening to help the Blues cement their top-four spot in the Premier League table.
The Barcelona-linked Brazilian latched onto Eden Hazard’s pass in the 57th minute before sending in a brilliant effort that flew past Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to hand the hosts all three points in what proved to be a tough game at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had taken the lead through Pedro in only the ninth minute, but Ciaran Clark’s impressive header restored parity and handed Newcastle hope of at least securing a point.
But the Magpies went on to lose 2-1 and drop back into the relegation zone while Chelsea moved six points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal following the Gunners’ 1-0 loss away to West Ham earlier in the day.

94 mins: I cannot believe they’ve done that. Taken short. five Newcastle men in the box throw their arms at the heavens in disgust.
94 mins: Corner to Newcastle…
90 mins: Into the final minute now. Olivier Giroud is on, in place of Eden Hazard.
Four minutes to be added.
86 mins: While it’s only 2-1, Newcastle are still in this.
Rondon has been a real nuisance all night and he’s got the beating of Azpilicueta in the air but heads wide.
82 mins: “We want you to stay, Hudson-Odio” is now ringing around Stamford Bridge. Big statement from the home fans.
73 mins: He’s been a central figure today, and that would have crowned it all for David Luiz, but his free-kick dips about five yards too late.
66 mins: This could be trouble for Newcastle. Jamaal Lascelles has done himself a mischief colliding with the advertising hoardings.
There’s an ugly looking gash on his knee which will need some attention, but it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s more than just a cut. Was some impact.
63 mins: Jorginho picks up a yellow for a shirt pull. Ross Barkley is on in place of Mateo Kovacic.
GOAL! | Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle | Willian 57′
56 mins: Big chance for the home side, and again it’s Pedro.
Marcus Alonso’s cross is into a dangerous area but Pedro scuffs his effort and it turns into an absolute pea roller.
54 mins: Well it’s a much more open game than it was in the first half, and for all he made that brilliant save, Martin Dubravka has flapped at a couple of corners already.
47 mins: Terrific save!
Having been so compact for most of the game, Newcastle are carved open just minutes into the second period. Willian feeds Pedro and there’s nothing wrong with his low finish – just an excellent stop from Dubravka.
