England World Cup squad: Wise reveals injury problem for Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson
Henderson was named in Gareth Southgate’s 23-man England squad this afternoon.
The Liverpool captain is a candidate to skipper Southgate’s side for the competition, having previously taken the armband during qualifying.
Wise believes Henderson, who has led Liverpool to the Champions League final this season, is more important to the England team than people realise.
And he says Southgate may have a problem if Henderson gets injured, because there are not any other midfielders like him in the squad.
“I think it (the Champions League) is very important, for his confidence anyway,” Wise said of the Liverpool star Sky Sports.
“I think the guy’s playing extremely well. I think he’s one of those players who is a bit of an unsung hero. He sits in there and he breaks things up.
“I look at the midfield and I think the worrying think about the midfield for me is Jordan is probably the only one that can play this ball in behind and really create a ball from a long distance.
“I look at the other midfield players and think they are very much players that like to run at people, like the ball, like short passes.
“I think he’s the one that can open people up with long-range passing.
“I think it’s a slight problem, if something happens to him, because everything then becomes quite short.
“So hopefully he will get through things and he will be fine.
“But I think he’s an important player in this competition, I really do.”
