Gil Dias sets sights on helping Nottingham Forest win promotion to the Premier League
Gil Dias has set his sights on helping Nottingham Forest to the Premier League after admitting the club’s European Cup winning history played a part in his arrival.
The 21-year-old winger, who is valued at around £20m, became the Reds’ fourth signing of the summer when he joined on a season-long loan from Monaco on Saturday.
Dias’ arrival is the latest coup for Forest as the Championship club signed a third exciting Portuguese prospect, following the arrivals of Joao Carvalho and Diogo Goncalves.
Why Jorge Mendes is helping Nottingham Forest assemble a squad to challenge for the Premier League
He spent last year in Serie A on loan at Fiorentina but is looking forward to dropping down to the England’s second tier for a season he hopes will end in promotion.
“I’m very excited because it’s a club with so much history. I want to make the fans happy, to make everyone happy and help the club to the Premier League,” he told the club website.
“I have friends who came here and they told me about the club. It’s a good club and I know they have won two Champions Leagues.
“Not every club has done this, so it’s a big club.”
Dias says the fact Aitor Karanka is manager made him want to join Forest and he hopes to impress the former Real Madrid defender.
“It’s important because when I knew Nottingham was interested in me I saw who the coach was here. I’ve seen all the teams he has trained and I thought maybe I could be a good player in his team,” he said.
The former Braga youngster has become the fourth Portuguese player on the books alongside Carvalho, Goncalves and central defender Tobias Figueiredo.
He believes the presence of familiar faces in fellow new signings Carvlaho and Goncalves, his Portugal Under-21 teammates, will help them settle in at the City Ground quickly.
“Yes because we play together in the national team so we know each other and it’s going to be easier for us,” he said.
