Liverpool news: Barnes makes bold Salah to Man City or Man Utd claim – EXCLUSIVE | Football | Sport
That’s according to Reds hero John Barnes.
The Egypt international was sensational under Jurgen Klopp last season as Liverpool reached the Champions League final.
Salah won the Premier League Golden Boot upon his return to England, netting 44 goals in all competitions for the Reds.
The winger, 26, was linked with moves to Real Madrid or Barcelona in the summer.
However, Salah opted to pen a new long-term contract at Liverpool, keeping him at Anfield until 2023.
And Barnes says Liverpool shouldn’t be worried about losing Salah next summer to Real Madrid, City or United, claiming the forward is only thriving thanks to Klopp’s system.
When asked whether Liverpool will find it hard to keep hold of Salah next summer, Bonus Code Bets ambassador Barnes exclusively told Express Sport: “I don’t think so. We can all speculate if a player is going to play well.
“Teams will be after him but I don’t think that necessarily will make it hard to keep him after he signed a new contract.
“I think he’s sensible enough to know that why he has done so well is not just because of the player he is, it’s because of Jurgen Klopp’s style of play. It suits him.
“I guarantee if he goes to any other club, Manchester City, he will not score those goals because of the way they play.
“If he went to Real Madrid he wouldn’t score as many. You have to look at the type of football the club plays and see if that suits you.
“That’s what Jurgen Klopp does. He brings players in that suits the way Liverpool play.
“Naby Keita for example, Man City may not want him but if you ask Klopp whether he wants Kevin De Bruyne or Naby Keita, he would want Keita because of the way he wants to play. All of the players he has now suits him.
“I think it would be a mistake if he [Salah] left because he will not play as well and score as many goals for anywhere else. Arsenal play different football, Manchester United play different football.”
Salah has impressed at the start of this season, with Liverpool sitting at the summit of the Premier League table after four games.
The former Chelsea ace has netted twice and chipped in with one assist this time out.
However, Barnes isn’t expecting Salah to tally as many goals this season, with the Reds hero claiming that will help Liverpool catch City in the Premier League.
“I don’t expect him to score 40-odd goals this season which can help the team get better,” he added.
“They need goals from other avenues and if we can get closer to Manchester City, which I think we will, without him scoring 40 goals, then they’re doing a great job.
“Maybe he won’t be as individually influential in terms of how many he scores, but he could help Liverpool get closer to City. He may only score 20 or 25 goals.
“You don’t need one player scoring all the goals because if that player gets injured, it’s a problem.
“If a lot of players are contributing and the goals are shared around, it’s much better for the team.
“I’m much happier with the team this year knowing that maybe Salah won’t be as dominant in terms of his goalscoring.”
Liverpool are back in action this afternoon, with the Reds facing Tottenham in the Premier League’s early kick-off (12:30pm).
