Liverpool player ratings vs Tottenham: Firmino and Mane outshine Salah | Football | Sport
Liverpool made it five wins from their opening five Premier League fixtures as they saw off Tottenham at Wembley.
Georginio Wijnaldum opened the scoring for the visitors with a strong header after a mistake from Michel Vorm, bagging his first league goal away from home for the Reds.
Roberto Firmino then doubled the advantage when he tapped home from a yard out following good work from Sadio Mane on the left wing.
Firmino also had an early goal ruled out for offside and Mohamed Salah went close before Erik Lamela’s late strike set up a nervy finish, but Liverpool held on for the win.
Express Sport has run the rule over the Liverpool players during their win at Wembley, but do you agree with these ratings?
Liverpool player ratings vs Tottenham Hotspur – Premier League
GK: Alisson – 5
Looked much sharper with the ball at his feet following his error last time out.
Comfortably kept out Christian Eriksen’s free-kick, but little else to do.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 6
Was always an out-ball for the Reds with Spurs deploying a narrow midfield.
However, he also did his job defensively under scrutiny as Danny Rose looked to push on.
CB: Joe Gomez – 6
Suffered a couple of uncharacteristic lapses after a fantastic start to the season, but was bailed out by Van Dijk.
CB: Virgil van Dijk – 7
Always looks like he has so much time on the ball and dominated the aerial battle.
Calmness personified, and was alert to mop up when Gomez was caught out.
LB: Andrew Robertson – 6
A quieter afternoon than in recent weeks, but kept Kieran Trippier on his toes.
CM: James Milner – 7
Dogged and resilient in a scrappy, congested midfield.
Not allowed too much space but managed to pull out a couple of fantastic deliveries.
CM: Georginio Wijnaldum – 7
The Dutchman’s looping header was his first away goal for the Reds in the Premier League.
A bright spark all afternoon, and looked like he was relishing the challenge against Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele.
CM: Naby Keita – 5
Came back in for captain Jordan Henderson after missing out against Leicester, but seemed slightly out of sorts for much of the match.
Did grow into the game but less effective than his midfield partners.
RAM: Mohamed Salah – 6
Got the better of Jan Vertonghen on a couple of occasions and forced Vorm into a few reasonable stops.
However, the Egyptian seemed slightly frustrated as the goals aren’t quite coming as easily as last season.
LAM: Sadio Mane – 7
A lovely turn and run led to Firmino’s strike, but the Senegalese forward could have helped himself to a couple with a bit more composure.
Went for goal when he should have passed on more than one occasion and was also guilty of some wayward finishing, but definitely made things happen.
ST: Roberto Firmino – 8
Got through so much work for his team, both in attack and defence.
In the right place to get on the scoresheet and took a nasty blow to the eye as he continued putting himself about.
Invaluable to his side.
SUB: Jordan Henderson (on for Firmino, 72 mins) – 5
Did his best to control the tempo but Firmino’s departure hurt the Reds as they faded late on.
SUB: Daniel Sturridge (on for Keita, 82 mins) – 5
Found himself in good areas but Liverpool’s selfishness in attack meant he couldn’t make an impact.
SUB: Joel Matip (on for Alexander-Arnold, 89 mins) – N/A
Brought on to shore things up but couldn’t prevent Lamela’s late consolation.
