Liverpool transfer news: Fabinho decision causes mystery on Merseyside
The Brazilian joined Liverpool from Lyon the week after the Champions League final.
Jurgen Klopp moved quickly to snap up the midfielder from Monaco in a deal worth £40m.
He was the first arrival of the summer which has seen Naby Keita finally join and Alisson sign from Roma.
Fabinho has played in the Reds pre-season matches and has worn the No 3 shirt.
However, as pointed out by the Liverpool Echo, the club website is yet to confirm his official squad number.
No statement has been released, as is common for new player numbers, like when Sadio Mane changed to No 10 this summer.
And that has led to a debate as to what number Fabinho could take and what that means for players on the fringes.
The Echo speculate Fabinho may want the No 2 as he wore at Monaco, which could mean he’s waiting to see if Nathaniel Clyne departs, while the No 22 is also put forward which is worn by Simon Mignolet.
Numbers not currently allocated include: 3, 13, 19, 24, 25 and 26.
Alisson is also without a listed number along with youngster Rhian Brewster.
Keita however has taken the No 8 shirt, the first occupant since Steven Gerrard, to show that it’s not just a case of all the new players waiting for confirmation.
Liverpool are looking to offload a number of fringe players with Danny Ings, Divock Origi, Lazar Markovic and Dominic Solanke all uncertain of their futures.
But after a summer revamp former Red Jamie Carragher reckons Jurgen Klopp will be challenging for the title.
“It does look like a really top-end squad at the moment, possibly as good as anything I was involved in and I was at Liverpool for 17 years,” he told talkSPORT.
“The squad that they have now and the strength they’re looking to gain is as good as anything I played in.”
