Liverpool transfer news: Xherdan Shaqiri to Lazio claim emerges as winger has medical
Shaqiri has emerged as a target for Jurgen Klopp as he looks to add another dimension to his attack ahead of next season.
On Thursday night Liverpool agreed to meet the winger’s £13m release clause, which was activated when Stoke were relegated in May.
Shaqiri cut short his post-World Cup holiday to travel to Merseyside for a medical which is due to be completed over the weekend.
While undergoing those routine tests it has emerged that Lazio showed interest in getting the 26-year-old on-board too.
According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web, Lazio tried to convince Shaqiri to head back to Serie A.
However, their offer to the former Inter Milan wideman was trumped by that of Liverpool.
Shaqiri is now poised to put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Anfield, where he will compete with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino for a starting spot.
Shaqiri heads to Liverpool off the back of scoring 15 goals in 84 Premier League appearances during his three-season stint at Stoke.
And he is unlikely to be the only arrival on Merseyside before the transfer window shuts next month.
Gent ace Moses Simon has revealed Liverpool were keen on him before the Shaqiri move came together.
“Well, for now, I’m still a player of KAA Gent,” said Simon.
“Obviously, there was interest from Liverpool but nothing is concrete for now.
“I’m currently in Holland with the rest of the squad and we are getting ready for the new season.
“We have a game against PAOK in two days. Hopefully, I might play in that one.”
