Ed Woodward regrets Manchester United’s failure to sign Virgil van Dijk ahead of Liverpool and is now ready to invest heavily to improve Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defence, according to reports.

Van Dijk has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the world at Liverpool, who signed the Dutchman in a £75 million deal from Southampton in January 2018.

United reportedly made a last-ditch bid for Van Dijk while he was still a Southampton player but were told that a deal had already been agreed with Liverpool.

And according to the Evening Standard, Woodward is ‘rueful’ over United missing out on Van Dijk and feels Liverpool’s deal has turned out to be a ‘bargain’.

The report also claims that Liverpool’s £75m deal for Van Dijk has now convinced Woodward that United should be prepared to spend big on new defensive signings.

And the United chief also feels that Manchester City’s decision to sign Kyle Walker for in excess of £50m was a turning point in regards to clubs paying high fees for top defenders.

A bid of £40 million for Aaron Wan-Bissaka has already been rejected by Crystal Palace but United are set to follow that up with an increased offer.

United are also interested in signing Harry Maguire but Leicester City are demanding £90 million for the England international.

United had also offered to make Matthijs de Ligt’s the highest-paid teenager with a £350,000-a-week contract offer but the Ajax centre-back is set to snub a move to Old Trafford.
