Graeme Souness slams Liverpool star for Super Cup display against Chelsea

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has criticised Fabinho for his performance during Liverpool’s Super Cup win triumph on Wednesday.

The Reds beat Chelsea on penalties to lift the European trophy for the fourth time in Istanbul after the match finished 2-2 after extra time.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were far from their best against their Premier League rivals and had to come from behind after Olivier Giroud gave the Blues a first-half lead.

Liverpool’s midfield were particularly vulnerable for much of the game as they struggled to deal with an impressive display from N’Golo Kante, who played all 120 minutes despite recently returning from injury.

And Souness believed his former club looked very different from the team that won last year’s Champions League and highlighted Fabinho’s inability to deal with the Chelsea midfielder.

He told Virgin Media Sport Ireland: “This guy [Fabinho], twice he had Kante dance past him as if he had Jacques Cousteau boots, lead boots on.

“They were not Liverpool. I’m not seeing a Liverpool that resembles the Liverpool we saw last season.

“I’m amazed Liverpool were more tired than Chelsea – they’ve had two extra days to rest.”

The Reds trailed Frank Lampard’s side at half-time but were able to equalise just after the break through Sadio Mane, who was making his first start of the new campaign.

And the Senegal international struck again to put Klopp’s side ahead in extra time with a well-placed finish before Jorginho levelled from the penalty spot to ensure the game would be decided by penalties.

New goalkeeper Adrian made himself the hero in the shootout, saving Tammy Abraham’s decisive spot-kick to ensure the Reds returned to England with the silverware.

Despite getting the better of Chelsea, Souness said he was disappointed with Liverpool’s display and felt that Klopp’s side were second best on the night.

“I was disappointed with Liverpool tonight,” he added. ” I expected them to be lively, energetic and win comfortably, even by two or three goals.

“I really thought they were second best for the largest part. I thought Chelsea played better football and had more energy.

“Given Chelsea played Sunday and Liverpool played Friday that should not have been the case.”
