Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho said THIS to players in dressing room before Man City – pundit | Football | Sport
That is the opinion of legendary Liverpool defender and ESPN FC pundit Steve Nicol.
Manchester United have conceded the first goal in six of their last seven games in all competitions.
They have come back to claim points in four of those games but were not able to do so in the derby against Manchester City on Sunday.
United went down 3-1 at the Etihad as Pep Guardiola’s side maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
Nicol was not impressed with the Red Devils’ performance, especially after they pulled a goal back at 2-1.
However, he reckons Jose Mourinho is to blame for them going 2-0 down, saying he would have instructed his players to be cautious and sit back early in the game.
“They never asked them any questions all game really,” Nicol said of United.
“There is that little five minutes where they get the penalty, it’s 2-1 and you think ‘my goodness, after such a dominating performance, because of the situation, the derby, the whole drama, the whole thing’.
“But Man United never posed any questions whatsoever.
“People keep talking about ‘they haven’t started games very well’.
“And I continually say that’s the manager’s job.
“But I think what’s happening with United now is they’re starting games and he must be telling them ‘we have to be safe, let’s not open ourselves up, let’s be cautious’.
“And of course when you play against good teams, the likes of City, they’re going to come straight at you straight away.
“So it looks as if you’re sleeping out of the blocks but actually you’re not, you’re just doing what the manager told you – be cautious and don’t make mistakes.”
Manchester United will look to return to winning ways after the international break when they host Crystal Palace on November 24.
