Man Utd news: Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial criticism levelled at Jose Mourinho | Football | Sport
That is the view of Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith, who has been distinctly unimpressed with Manchester United so far this season.
Under Mourinho, United have been continually criticised and the Portuguese tactician has come under pressure over his position.
Against Manchester City last Sunday, United were outfought and outthought and they left the Etihad empty-handed after a dismal 3-1 defeat in the Manchester derby.
Mourinho was vocal in expressing his displeasure at the supposed lack of investment in his squad and he was unable to land a top centre-back.
United have spent over £350million since Mourinho succeeded Louis van Gaal two-and-a-half years ago.
Smith thinks some players have struggled to show real signs of improvement under Mourinho and has pointed the finger at the Red Devils manager.
“Well you’d have to say no,” Smith said when asked whether United have spent wisely with Mourinho at the helm.
“Two centre-halves – Lindelof and Bailly two Mourinho signings he seems to have discarded mentally and hence all the fuss about getting more centre backs over the summer.
“They’ve spent an awful lot of money not much less than Man City over recent times.
“And what have they got to show for it?
“I don’t think Mourinho is getting the best out of that group of players.
“It’s a hugely talented group that should be doing much better.
“You look at Marcus [Rashford], Anthony [Martial] and Alexis [Sanchez] has hardly kicked a ball in anger.
“These are players that are standing still and sometimes going backwards.”
United return to action after the current international break against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on November 24 (3pm).
