Man Utd news: Mourinho reveals why Fellaini started over Fred, talks Shaw injury | Football | Sport
Manchester United take on Watford this at Vicarage Road looking to end the Hornets’ 100 per cent winning start.
Jose Mourinho made one change from the side who beat Burnley 2-0 prior to the international break with Ashley Young coming in for Luke Shaw.
But new signing Fred has found himself on bench once again after struggling in his opening few games for the Red Devils since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk.
Instead, Mourinho has gone with Fellaini in his midfield, despite the Belgian being an injury doubt in the lead up to the game.
“He [Fellaini] is in a good moment he had a bit of a problem but we think he is in condition to play this kind of opponent and stadium and they play direct and very physical and we feel Fred that just arrived here and also just arrived back from the Brazil national team and Marouane is more experience in these situations so Fred is on the bench,” the Portuguese boss said.
Meanwhile, there was no place for defender Shaw after he was involved in a nasty collision playing for England during the international break.
Shaw suffered a concussion while on international duty with England when he collided with Spain defender Dani Carvajal during the Three Lions’ 2-1 defeat at Wembley last Saturday.
The defender was taken off on a stretcher having been given oxygen while being tended to by medical staff for five minutes.
He returned to Manchester United on Monday, having previously been looked after by England staff, before Mourinho revealed he was legible to face the Hornets.
Mourinho has since admitted Shaw was medically fit but decided not to play him after not training with the rest of the group in preparation for the match.
“He could from the medical point of view play, but he didn’t work with us all week,” Mourinho said.
“We felt that Luke not playing today was the best thing for the team and then he can come back without any kind of limitation next Wednesday.”
With Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City all picking up maximum points this afternoon, Mourinho knows his side can’t afford to drop points against Watford.
