Man Utd news: Only one manager can replace Jose Mourinho if he was sacked – Hislop
In fact, Hislop reckons Germany boss Joachim Low is the only manager who could take over from Mourinho at Old Trafford.
Mourinho has cut an unhappy figure at Manchester United in recent months and especially during this pre-season.
The Portuguese was clearly dissatisfied with the club’s transfer business during a press-conference over the weekend and was not happy to have such few first-team players to pick from for the International Champions Cup tournament.
Hislop believes it would be too expensive for United to pay off Mourinho just yet and is not 100 per cent certain Low would want the Red Devils job.
“Personally, I think, he sees out the year,” the former West Ham goalkeeper said.
“It’s too expensive to let him go at this point. Yes they do (have enough money) but I think there are too things working here for Jose Mourinho in terms of staying on until the end of the season.
“It’s too expensive and as of right now, I’m not sure there is a ready-made replacement for Jose Mourinho.
“You look at big-name managers who are available and can step into this job, the only one that really jumps to mind is Jogi Low. Is he the man? Does he want to take over the club?
“I think there are a lot of question marks on his side over whether that’s the answer to Manchester United’s woes.”
Hislop also admits he was never a fan of Mourinho becoming the manager at Old Trafford.
He added: “But one thing’s for certain – from the get go, I have never been convinced that Jose Mourinho and Manchester United has been a good fit and this kind of emphasises that.
“Manchester United has always been about the style of the game, you don’t see that under Jose.
“It’s always been about bringing through young players, well he’s just shot himself in the foot with that one.”
