Man Utd transfer news: Dimitar Berbatov tells Jose Mourinho the one signing he must make
That’s the verdict of former Old Trafford ace Dimitar Berbatov, who has identified Harry Maguire as the man Jose Mourinho should target.
Manchester United have been quiet in the transfer market this summer following the acquisitions of Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant.
But Mourinho is believed to be eager to land a new centre-back before the window slams shut on August 9.
Leicester star Harry Maguire has emerged as a potential candidate to link up with United following his impressive performances for England at the World Cup.
United are thought to be lining up an offer worth £65m for the 25-year-old, who cost the Foxes less than a third of that figure last summer.
Berbatov has offered his backing to that prospective deal after being asked what United need to overtake reigning champions Manchester City.
“Manchester United need to sign a defender – probably Maguire from Leicester – he had a great World Cup, simply because of the way he controlled the ball and the vision he has on the pitch,” Berbatov told Betfair.
“He has the ability of passing like a midfielder and stays calm under pressure. He would be a great addition to the squad.”
A move to United would continue the remarkable rise of Sheffield United academy graduate Maguire.
Former England boss Sam Allardyce believes Maguire has the potential to get even better in Manchester.
“It depends what coach he gets next,” said Allardyce, when asked about the defender joining United.
“If you get a good coach, they both take into consideration and stop this palaver about centre halves being good on the ball. You’ve got to be a very good defender if you’re going to play for Manchester United.
“I remember speaking to Sir Alex Ferguson and Brian Kidd about this. If you’re going to play for Manchester United you’ve got to be able to handle one-on-one.
“Manchester United need to go and break teams down and to commit, so if you’re a central defender you have to sit there one-on-one and be able to cope with it. This means you have to be one of the best defenders in the league.
“You can still teach Harry that defensive side of the game. Everybody needs to keep being reminded about what their responsibilities are. He’s certainly got the potential to get even better.”
United have also been credited with interest in Toby Alderweireld, Marquinhos and Leonardo Bonucci as they search for backline reinforcements.
