Man Utd transfer news: Jamie Redknapp makes Jurgen Klopp claim about Jose Mourinho’s deals
That is the verdict of Jamie Redknapp.
Mourinho has so far acquired three players for Manchester United this summer – Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant.
Since taking over United in 2016, Mourinho has splashed out over £360million, with Manchester City spending an incredible £512m over the same period.
Mourinho has moaned about the lack of activity and wants Ed Woodward to bring in more players before the transfer window closes on August 9, although there appears to be a reluctance on Woodward’s part to release more funds to the manager.
Whereas at Liverpool, Klopp has been able to strengthen so far in the areas he’s wanted to, enhancing their chances of a maiden Premier League triumph.
And while not taking sides between Mourinho and Woodward, Redknapp understands why the Portuguese tactician hasn’t been so heavily backed this summer.
“I can see both sides of the stand-off between him and Ed Woodward,” Redknapp wrote in his column for the Daily Mail.
“Jose will have seen rivals City and Liverpool back their managers in the transfer window.
“He will feel he deserves to be treated the same way, after finishing second and reaching the final of the FA Cup.
“The problem is that having already spent £360million in the past two seasons, Mourinho has gone into this summer demanding another five recruits.
“Since arriving at Old Trafford, he has strengthened almost every position in the team.
“Yet throughout United’s pre-season tour, all Mourinho has done is moan. He sounds like someone trying to engineer an exit.
“Alarm bells will be ringing in the United boardroom. Why back him with another £300m if they are soon to be faced with having to find another manager?”
