Man Utd transfer news: Jose Mourinho receives huge boost after Fred decision
Fred has spent the past five years on the books at Shakhtar after moving to Europe from Brazilian side Internacional.
And during his time in Ukraine he’s attracted plenty of admirers, with United boss Jose Mourinho known to be among them.
Manchester United want Fred to bolster their midfield and help give more freedom to Paul Pogba to work his magic further up the pitch.
With the summer transfer window looming Fred has now revealed he’s explained his decision on his future to Shakhtar.
“I’m very happy at Shakhtar,” Fred told Brazilian outlet SporTV. “I’ve been working well here but it has been five years.
“I made it clear to the club that I was very happy here but I want to make a bigger leap in my career.
“There are other clubs interested in England and France. I want to make a bigger leap, I made it clear to the club.
“Now I just have to wait to get through the World Cup and see which is the best destination.
“I think I have to change a little. I have dreams of playing in major clubs in Europe. I made it clear that it’s my moment.
“The club are reluctant to release [me]. I have a contract until 2021. As soon as I come back from the World Cup we will sit down, talk and look at the options.”
Fred is tied down at Shakhtar until 2023 having extended his contract in January this year.
Reports this week claim the 25-year-old has a £52.89m (€60m) release clause written into his current deal.
United’s rivals Manchester City are also said to be interested in getting Fred on-board as they strengthen their title-winning squad.
While a potential move to join compatriots Neymar and Marquinhos at Paris Saint-Germain has been touted as well.
