Man Utd transfer news: Lorenzo Pellegrini lined up to replace Marouane Fellaini
United have already bolstered their midfield options in the wake of Michael Carrick’s retirement by buying Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.
But they are facing the prospect of losing contract rebel Fellaini, who’s refused to put pen to paper on a new deal at Old Trafford.
Mourinho is said to be eager to replace the Belgium international with a young box-to-box midfielder ahead of next season.
And the latest reports indicate Pellegrini has been earmarked to fulfil that role in Manchester United’s squad.
According to the Manchester Evening News, United are admirers of Roma’s 22-year-old midfielder.
Pellegrini racked up 37 appearances in all competitions after returning to Roma last summer.
And it seems his performances under Eusebio Di Francesco at the Stadio Olimpico turned Mourinho’s head.
Pellegrini’s emergence as a target comes with United holding reservations over Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s price tag.
Milinkovic-Savic is valued at a whopping £88m (€100m) by Roma’s city rivals Lazio.
And United are uncomfortable about handing over that much money for a player who’s yet to figure in the Champions League.
United are not just looking to strengthen in midfield as they build a side capable of contending with Premier League champions Manchester City.
Jose Mourinho is keen to find a new centre-back to partner Eric Bailly in the heart of defence.
Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld is Mourinho’s No 1 choice, with Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar deemed a back-up.
