Man Utd transfer news: Real Madrid think they can sign David de Gea after new development
David de Gea has been Real Madrid’s first choice target to replace Keylor Navas for the last few years.
And the Manchester Evening News claim they now believe they can prise him away from Manchester United for £100m.
Real Madrid announced Julen Lopetegui as their new manager yesterday, and he has already set his sights on his Spain No 1.
De Gea has refused to rule out a move while with the Spain side preparing for Russia.
“I don’t think Florentino Pérez has my number,” he told El Partidazo de Cope. “I don’t know if I’ll be the goalkeeper at Real Madrid.
“What I do know is that I’m very happy in Manchester. What I want is to win titles, like every other player.
“There’s no lacking in winning titles there (United) – we have to improve.
“We are a big club, we are not here to take second place. We have to improve and make this club great.”
Jose Mourinho is desperate to keep hold his best player but he may be powerless if Madrid come calling again.
A deal fell through in 2015 despite appearing to be done, with an administration error at the 11th hour.
De Gea then signed a new deal with United and has been in sensational form ever since.
But Madrid are ready to try again it seems and have made him the top target, with Thibaut Courtois, Jan Oblak and Gianluigi Donnarumma other options.
Lopetegui is said to have a close relationship with De Gea and reports in Spain claim he has demanded his signing this summer.
Lopetegui could be sacked as Spain manager on the eve of the World Cup with the Spanish federation fuming at the timing of his decision and announcement, having extended his contract until 2020 in May.
De Gea will start the tournament as Spain’s No 1 and is hoping to take his excellent form from United to Russia.
De Gea has been United’s player of the season on three occasions.
