Man Utd transfer news: Shock Antoine Griezmann claim emerges after Atletico announcement
That’s according to journalist and radio presenter Pilib De Brun, who’s revealed the news in the wake of the Frenchman announcing he’s staying at Atletico.
Griezmann looked all set to call time on his Atletico career this summer with a highly-anticipated move to Barcelona thought to be on the cards.
However, he announced last week that he’s sticking with Diego Simeone’s side and has since gone on to put pen to paper on a new contract at the Wanda Metropolitano.
It seems Griezmann could have joined Manchester United though – a switch he was poised to complete last year before he had a change of heart when FIFA upheld Atletico’s transfer ban.
De Brun, who works for talkSPORT and has built up a strong following among United fans, broke the news on Twitter on Saturday night.
“Reliably informed that Antoine Griezmann was offered to Utd days before he released his video claiming he’s staying,” wrote De Brun.
Griezmann joined Theo Hernandez in committing his future to Atletico Madrid by signing a new deal earlier this week.
And he revealed his reason for staying with Simeone’s Europa League winners, who’ve tied him down until 2023.
“I am convinced that together we will do great things,” said Griezmann.
“Last season, I won my first European title with the club, something that I had been pursuing.
“I love the project that we are building with such great players.”
Griezmann recovered from a slow start to score 29 goals in 49 games in all competitions for Atletico this season.
He’ll be eager to make his mark for France at this summer’s World Cup off the back of his decision to stay in Madrid.
