Phil Jones admits he does not lose sleep over criticism for fans that he was given a new four year deal at Manchester United.
The England centre back has been at the club since 2011 and agreed terms on a deal last week which will keep him at the club until 2023.
However, the announcement was met with a negative reaction from a number of fans with many claiming the club need to be looking at bringing in a new defender to replace the 26-year-old.
But, the defender said the criticism doesn’t bother him.
“I don’t lose sleep about what people say about me. It’s football,” Jones told reporters following the win against Fulham. “I’m going to get criticism in the future, I’ve had criticism in the past.
“Honestly, I genuinely don’t care. I have a wonderful family and wonderful friends. I play football for Man United, I’ve been given an extra contract and I’m grateful for that.”
Jose Mourinho was after a centre back in the summer transfer window and was vocal in his disappointment when the board did not give him the financial backing to land who he wanted.
The club continue to be linked with a whole host of world class centre backs but Jones admits the speculation doesn’t faze him.
“Since I’ve come to this club we’ve signed players left, right and centre: forwards, defenders, goalkeepers,” he said. “We’re Man United, of course we’re going to be interested in the best players in the world, I’d be pretty amazed if we weren’t.”
