Mikel Arteta to Arsenal: Board told to appoint Rafa Benitez over former star
Arteta is the overwhelming favourite to land the Arsenal job following the resignation of Arsene Wenger.
The Spaniard, who is currently an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, is reportedly holding talks with the Gunners today.
Arteta has not managed before and says it would be a huge risk from Arsenal.
“It would be a very big gamble,” Mills said.
“Yes, he knows the football club. Obviously he has worked under Pep Guardiola, one of the best to learn from.
“Is he ready to step up to such a big job as Arsenal? I think that’s a huge, huge gamble if Arsenal go down that route.”
Reports claim the new Arsenal manager would only have £50million to spend in the transfer window.
Mills says that is perhaps why they are looking for a rookie manager in Arteta but he thinks Newcastle boss Benitez would be a far better fit.
“How much?!,” Mills said in response to hearing Arsenal’s transfer budget.
“Is this why they’re looking at someone like Arteta?
“Other managers would go ‘I’m not coming for that, no chance’.
“One name that I would throw in, if they could, and I don’t want to upset the Geordies, Rafa Benitez.
“I think it would be a perfect fit for Arsenal to steady the ship and take them forward.”
