Mohamed Salah: Rio Ferdinand delivers bottle throwing verdict as Liverpool beat PSG | Football | Sport
Footage has emerged of Salah throwing a bottle to the floor after Liverpool’s last-gasp winner over PSG in the Champions League.
Roberto Firmino came off the bench to score the winner after goals from Thomas Meunier and Kylian Mbappe had cancelled out the Reds’ two-goal lead.
Reaction to the incident has been mixed with fans questioning the Egypt’s motives for what looked like a show of frustration.
Salah had a poor night by his standards, outshone by Sadio Mane and Daniel Sturridge before his mistake led to Mbappe’s equaliser.
He was then substituted before the winner but Ferdinand thinks he was showing his happiness in his own way.
“I hope so,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport when asked if Salah was celebrating.
“I think you have to [look at] the way this team is, the bond they have out there on the pitch.
“I think Salah’s celebrating in his own way. His hands were up at the beginning of that. The first picture [shows] his hands were up [celebrating].”
Salah has so far struggled to show the form of last season after recovering from the shoulder injury he suffered in the Champions League final and then racing back for the World Cup.
The 26-year-old has scored twice in the Premier League so far, against Brighton and West Ham, but has now gone three games without a goal for Liverpool.
fans on Twitter were quick to point out the forward’s actions and some certainly took it as an angry reaction.
User @rish_rathi posted: “Did Salah just throw a water bottle and his image of being the team player when Bobby scored?”
@zefutbolwriter posted: “Liverpool’s three forwards are absolutely in it for themselves. Another reason they won’t be winning anything this season.
“This reaction from Salah is ridiculous.”
@kizYNWA wrote: “What’s Salah’s problem? Either celebrate your teammates injury time goal against PSG or just **** off, class player but don’t need that kind of negativity around Anfield.”
But plenty backed Salah with @TaintlessRed posting: “Lay off Salah. He was celebrating first and then throwing the bottle is obviously just sheer relief after his error cost the equaliser for 2-2, he was gutted & Bobby saved the result. Can’t believe some ppl think he’s not happy we won.”
@Sanaah10x added: “For all those criticising Mo Salah he was celebrating and he was angry at himself for the second goal… haters gonna hate.”
