Tottenham team vs Liverpool: Mauricio Pochettino picks Dele Alli replacement, star man out | Football | Sport
Tottenham face Liverpool today aiming to bounce back after their 2-1 Premier League defeat to Watford before the international break.
Pochettino’s side were stung by the Hornets at Vicarage Road and, speaking ahead of today’s showdown, the Argentine urged Spurs to show hunger from the first minute.
“If you watch the Watford game again, you see we played so slow, so sloppy, from the beginning,” Tottenham manager Pochettino said ahead of the Wembley clash.
“It was like we thought ‘OK, it is a nice afternoon in Watford, Elton John is in the stands…’ it was like going to walk in Hyde Park with my child.”
Pochettino also blasted Tottenham for taking their eye off the ball following their 3-0 drubbing of Manchester United just six days before their Watford woes.
“After Manchester United, all the signals from the team were that we were going to crash,” Pochettino said ahead of the Liverpool match.
“We cannot talk about winning the Premier League [after Old Trafford] and the job is done.
“You needed to come in and ask for more training.
“Of course, I am the guilty one because I saw but I could not change the situation.
“We weren’t right in the way we prepared and that is why it’s still so painful.
“To win now against Liverpool can change the mood and the perception but if we win, we would then have to win against Brighton next Saturday because you need to be consistent.
“It’s not to be focused and right in one game and then the job is done. Football is about energy over 10 months.”
Tottenham are without Alli for today’s match, while star man and club captain Hugo Lloris is also sidelined with a thigh injury.
And Pochettino has chosen their replacements.
Tottenham have made three changes for today’s match.
Harry Winks replaces Alli in the middle of the park.
And Danny Rose and Eric Dier are back in.
