World Cup 2018: Deco reveals England concern as he names the one star who could shine
England head to Russia off the back of an unbeaten qualifying campaign under Gareth Southgate.
Yet, the Three Lions don’t have huge expectation on their shoulders, unlike previous tournaments, to deliver the goods in Russia.
Only 11 players who represented England at Euro 2016 will travel to Russia with 17 of the 23-man group aged between 23 and 28 years old.
And Deco, who won 75 caps for Portugal, fears Southgate’s trust in youth may not pay off – although he is excited to see the likes of young talent Marcus Rashford.
“It’s difficult to give an opinion because I’m an outsider,” Betfair ambassador Deco told Express Sport.
“Of course I saw a lot of English players. I got to play against one of the best midfielders of his generation, Lampard.
“This type of competition maybe you need a little bit of luck in the right moments.
“It’s difficult. I think this team is young, there is a mix between the less generation, the players that finish, not finished but getting to the older generation but they have good young players.
“Rashford for example. I don’t know if these players are prepared for this kind of competition. I hope so because they are good.”
England kick off their World Cup campaign on Monday when they take on Tunisia.
Southgate’s men then face Panama before a final Group G encounter with Belgium.
To celebrate their Ultimate El Clasico campaign, Betfair gave fans the opportunity to win a VIP experience, which included a Camp Nou tour, tickets to El Clasico and an exclusive training session at Barcelona’s training ground with club legends and Betfair ambassadors, Rivaldo and Deco.
